Lyndhurst has been known as the capital of The New Forest since William the Conqueror established it as a royal hunting ground in 1079.

The grave of the original Alice in Wonderland (Alice Liddell, later Hargreaves) is in the churchyard of St Michael & All Angels’ Church located at the top of the High Street.

St Michael & All Angels’ Church

St Michael & All Angels’ ChurchSituated at the top of the High Street, sits the impressive gothic parish church of St Michael and All Angels. The church was built in the mid-nineteenth century, within the church are beautiful pre-Raphaelite windows designed by William Morris and a fresco by Lord Frederick Leighton which is said to be modelled on local people. In the graveyard is the grave of one of the New Forest’s famous residents, Alice Pleasance Liddell. Alice was the little girl who inspired Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ and ‘Through the Looking Glass’

The Stag Hotel

The Stag This high street 11 bedroomed hotel is a traditional pub with a modern twist. With original features dating back to 1907 including working open fireplaces, the pub has a large rear garden complete with chickens and aviary as well as a large dining room off the pub bar.

Appletree Court

Appletree Court At the other end of the high street is Appletree Court, home to New Forest District Council and the Film:New Forest Office. The landscaped grounds and Council chamber are available for filming. There is also the possibility of using this as a unit base.
