The Rider is an incredible modern western drama based on lead actor Brady Jandreau’s extraordinary real life story.
Brady and his family live in financial poverty, mostly due to his father’s alcoholism and love of playing slots. Brady was a rising star in the rodeo circuit when he suffered a serious head injury during a bronc riding competition that left him with brain damage; hindering motor functions in his right hand and leaving him prone to seizures.
Doctors told Brady he could no longer ride as doing so will make his worsen his seizures. But Brady cannot bring himself to quit riding -despite his best friend, Lane (played by his real-life best friend: Lane Scott), being wheelchair-bound due to his own horse riding accident.
This incredible tale filled with grief, identity-crisis and family turmoil is raw and thought-provoking with an incredible performance from Brady Jandreau. One of the things that makes this film so unusual and touching is Jandreau’s friends and family who play themselves in the film.
Small details of Brady Jandreau’s real life were changed for the film; Jandreau’s character is called Brady Blackburn and in real life his mother is still alive.
The Rider is produced and directed by Chloé Zhao who Brady Jandreau actually met before his near-fatal injury. It premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight section at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017 where it won the Art Cinema Award.
